Free National Parks

It’s time once again to announce the dates for 2012’s Free National Park Days. More than 100 national parks regularly charge admission fees (full list here) but the US National Park Service plans out special days where those fees are waived and you can get in for free. This years dates include:

  • January 14-16
    Martin Luther King Jr. weekend
  • April 21-29
    National Park Week
  • June 9
    Get Outdoors Day
  • September 29
    National Public Lands Day
  • November 10-12
    Veterans Day weekend

You can view last year’s posts suggesting our favorite national parks by using the national parks tag or by visiting the National Park Service’s website.

This weekend is the first fee-free weekend of the year in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Saturday through Monday the parks will all waive their fees so this is a perfect time to break through the January doldrums and get out of the house.

This year Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be holding a celebration honoring the life of Dr. King. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education. From 1-3 PM there’ll be a presentation on Dr. King’s life and his legacy. The presentation also includes one of Dr. King’s challenges, “What are you doing for others?” and will include a community service project.
