National Parks

Tomorrow (June 21) national parks around the United States will be open for FREE in honor of the first day of summer. To get the most bang for your buck, check out the full list of parks waiving their fees or find a park near you. In the past we’ve suggested a large number of parks to visit and we have two more recommendations:

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake Oregon - 1

Crater Lake usually costs $10/car but it’s the perfect park for a free day. Driving around the rim can make for some gorgeous views but be sure to check the current road and weather conditions to ensure snow won’t stop your drive. Snow doesn’t have to be a problem, the park offers snowshoe walks twice a day right now.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Although the Middle and East Keys are closed right now for turtle nesting, there’s still plenty to do at Dry Tortugas National Park. Garden Key is the place to visit here. Ft. Jefferson was home to 4 prisoners implicated in President Lincoln’s assassination in 1865. There’s also some great snorkeling to enjoy here and you can even camp overnight. Consider taking the Yankee Freedom over to the island for easy transport and meals.
