Summer Vacation: Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores is a small town that booms in the summer season. It’s family-friendly with calm gulf waters and a relaxing atmosphere. Tip: When arriving in town, stop by the Welcome Center to stock up on coupons, maps, and area guides. Right nearby is Orange Beach so if one beach looks to busy, just drive on by and choose from any of the beautiful beaches around.

Stay

  • Staybridge Suites Gulf Shores: This hotel is the #1 rated place in Gulf Shores according to TripAdvisor. There’s free hot breakfast and weeknight snacks including beer and wine. There’s also a mini-kitchen in the room so you can stock up on groceries.
  • Seachase Resort Pool and Ocean Image Credit: Seachase

  • SeaChase: This hotel is located in Orange Beach and is more luxurious. There are 5 pools including one infinity pool. It has direct beach access, fully equipped kitchens, and laundry in the apartment.
  • Vacation Rentals: Many people and companies own homes and properties in the area. If you’re flexible, choosing to rent a place for a week might be a nice option with full household access and privacy. Try these three options.

Eat

  • The Shrimp Basket: A simple menu of fish and chips with coleslaw won’t set you back too much here but you’ll find very filling portions. The Shrimp Po’ Boy is a hit here. Fried shrimp is also a steal and Sundays and Wednesdays the basket costs just $9.99.
  • Kitty’s Kafe: This is the prime breakfast spot in town. The french toast here is a hit with locals and tourists alike and they also serve lunch and dinner, not supper.
  • Sea-n-Suds Dinner Views Credit: Sea-n-Suds

  • Sea-N-Suds: This is a beach shack with high quality food. You get fresh food, ocean views, and a kid friendly experience. Try the gumbo with a coupon from Sea-N-Suds.Tip: Choose the free valet when parking here to avoid crossing a busy road.

Gulf Shores Alabama Beach

  • The Beach: Gulf Shores Public Beach is a nice safe choice. It has lifeguards, picnic benches, and is located near many town restaurants.
  • Gulf State Park: This is a nice quieter area where you can enjoy a number of activities. At the pavilion are a number of sand dunes and wide open ocean waters. At the Lake Shelby area you can swim in freshwater or enjoy boating. Orange Beach also has several areas included in this state park, details can be found here.

Details

  • Best for: Families looking for warmth, sun, and relaxation
  • Not For: People looking to avoid crowds
  • Notable: Airports are farther away than usual from this destination so you’ll need to drive in or rent a car
  • Budget: Low. We suggest just sitting back on the beaches and finding budget lodging. If you want to splurge a little, opt for the beachfront room instead of more activities. Since the BP oil spill, beaches are clean again and many locations are offering lower prices to get back the tourists so be on the lookout for bargains.
