Honeymoon Week: New Zealand

Our next featured honeymoon destination is a world away from our last one. This time we’re heading to the nation of New Zealand, to the South Island and the city of Nelson.

Nelson, New Zealand

view from Te Puna Wai B&B Nelson
Nelson is the geological center of New Zealand and its second settled oldest city. Another claim to fame of Nelson is that it receives the most hours of sun of all of New Zealand. Our top hotel pick is a cozy bed & breakfast named Te Puna Wai. It’s a historic home built in 1857 with views of Tasman Bay and the mountains. The hotel has many features:

  • 5-7 minute walk to nearby restaurants and shops, 25 minute walk or a $5 cab ride to the city
  • Haulashore Apartment: An independent living area on the lower level with kitchen and laundry access, marble-tiled bathroom, French doors opening to a veranda and terrace, and a fireplace
  • Wakatu Room: Lower level room with French doors opening to the outside, marble-tiled bathroom, and mini fridge
  • Fifeshire Suite: Occupies the entire top floor and features the best views or the bay. Features a mini fridge, picture window and an upgraded bathroom with a clawfoot tub
  • Features a guest lounge, veranda, elevated terrace lawn, hearty breakfasts, free wi-fi, and welcoming owners who speak 6 languages between the two of them

Abel Tasman Kayaking

Near your hotel is the award-winning Hopgood’s Restaurant which is definitely worth a trip. They use local and seasonal foods highlighted by their New Zealand wines. The current menu features items including lamb, beef wellington, and pumpkin ravioli. You can also enjoy more local wines at one of the many nearby winery tours. Make sure to try the sauvignon blanc, one of the region’s finest.

Enjoy time outdoors at Abel Tasman National Park. You can go on day walks, hikes, cruises, enjoy sea kayaking, and swim on secluded beaches. It’s worth it to spend many days here, enjoying all that you can. If you’re adventurous, you can skip the hotel and camp nearby. Other options include multi-day kayaking and hiking trips with lodging on-site.

View of Anchorage Bay

  • Best for: Gay couples. Not only is this hotel gay-friendly, it is also owned by a gay couple. Also perfect for couples who love the outdoors.
  • Not For: Someone who is looking for just a beach. While the beach here is wonderful, there’s so much to see and do that you would miss out.
  • Notable: Hotels here book up fast. Book as far in advance as possible for the region. Another option would be to book a vacation home for your stay. Check out this post by Miss Earrings on Weddingbee for more Nelson ideas.
  • Budget: Moderate. Your week-long hotel stay will cost $1500 in the high season for the Fifeshire Suite. Airfare runs the same amount per person so we estimate budgeting $5000 and hunting around for airfare deals.
  • Time to Visit: December through March will bring the warmest temperatures to the island.
  • Time to Avoid: April through October sees a slight dip in temperatures and increased rain. If you don’t plan on swimming, this could be a good time to avoid crowds and seek out lower rates.
