Take 10 Tuesday: Historic US Hotels

AAA regularly compiles information on hotels across the country, rating them according to a strict standard of guidelines. The AAA Diamond Rating Process covers hotel in the United States, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico. While monitoring for the highest quality hotels, AAA inspectors chose their favorite historic hotels across the United States. Here are the favorites as chosen by AAA’s 65 inspectors:

10. Boston Omni Parker House Hotel

One of this hotel’s claims-to-fame is its claim that it is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the United States. While it was made famous by stays of greats like Babe Ruth and John F. Kennedy, you may know it best for being the home of the Parker House Roll and Boston Cream Pie.

9. Brown Palace Hotel and Spa

At least 3 presidents and all 4 Beatles have stayed at this hotel and had a suite named after them. Dwight D. Eisenhower remains permanently immortalized on the mantel of a fireplace here, or at least the dent from one of his golf balls. This hotel’s standout features include its luxurious spa, restaurants and tea service.

8. Casa Marina Resort
Key West, Florida; AAA Four Diamond Rated

This hotel’s key history dates back to WWII, when it was used as officers’ quarters, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the US Army’s Sixth Missile battalion stayed here. Today the hotel is much calmer, offering guests the chance to enjoy tropical views, fun activities and rooms overlooking the hotel’s private beach.

7. The Dearborn Inn

The Dearborn Inn is the country’s first airport hotel, built by Henry Ford to provide Ford Motor Company guests and consultants a place to stay. The hotel also added colonial replica homes to honor the history of Americans Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Barbara Fritchie, Oliver Wolcott and Patrick Henry.

This hotel is so historic that it sits on an island that only allows horse and carriage, walking, and biking as acceptable forms of transportation. The hotel itself has 385 guest rooms, each with a separate theme and decorating style honoring many people and events across history.

5. The Hermitage Hotel
Nashville, Tennessee; AAA Five Diamond Rated

This hotel was named to honor Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage estate and was a stop for presidents and war heroes. The state Democratic Party even used this hotel as a headquarters at one time. The hotel was recently updated via a large renovation after the historic Nashville floods and was honored for the 6th year in a row with AAA’s Five Diamond Rating.

4. The Settlers Inn at Bingham Park

Head to the Poconos to see this beautifully restored Arts & Crafts style lodge. The hotel uses many types of architecture and decorative pieces native to the area to honor American arts and traditions. The hotel even has an award-winning restaurant featuring seasonal and regional menu items.

3. Sir Francis Drake Hotel
San Francisco, California; AAA Three Diamond Rated

This was once the hotel to be seen in, with Conrad Hilton and Elizabeth Taylor gracing the hotel with their presence and soldiers lodging here during the way. Not much has changed here in terms of popularity, this is a top wedding spot in the city with dancing on the roof underneath the starry skies of the city.

2. West Baden Springs Hotel

This hotel was a historical marvel for its unique architecture, including holding the title for the largest free-spanning dome in the United States and the world once upon a time. Once called “The Eighth Wonder of the World”, it featured mineral baths said to cure. Now this hotel is part of the French Lick Casino complex.

As homesteaders and adventurers poured into Jackson Hole, The Wort family moved to the area. As the area grew, the ambitions of the Wort family grew and The Wort Hotel was built to accommodate the area’s new visitors. This hotel was once a gambling resort and in honor of that, the Silver Dollar Bar was built out of 2,032 uncirculated silver dollars.
