Wizarding Week: Tips for touring London and Great Britain

  • Trying to determine when to visit London? Things to keep in mind:
    • Due to seasonal closings, you’ll want to travel between May and October.
    • With the recent engagement of Prince William, a royal wedding is being planned for “spring or summer 2011”. Odds are currently being placed on August but any time in there could be a wedding. This means London will be swarmed with people and likely wedding sites include Westminster Abbey or St. Paul’s Cathedral, meaning your tour would be interrupted.
    • UPDATE: The date has been set for April 29, 2011.
  • In 2012, the Olympic Games are being held in London. The torch arrives in the United Kingdom on May 18, 2012. The games will run July 27 through August 12. Crowd levels are expected to be record highs and public transport will have delays. Hotels may also be scarce. Rethink a trip in this time frame unless you are already attending the Olympics and want to expand on your stay.
  • It may be worth investing in the London Pass. Its benefits include:
    • Free public transport
    • Free entrance to many top attractions including:
      • London Zoo
      • St Paul’s Cathedral
      • Westminster Abbey
    • Discounted shopping and food at select restaurants
    • Free guidebook with helpful tips inside
