Escape: 5 Crowd-Free Places to Travel this Winter

Already thinking about winter travel? Want to go somewhere where you won’t find all the crowds? SmarterTravel has compiled a list of 5 places that may help you avoid crowds this winter season.

1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia Exchange
Most people come to Philly to seek out the story of America’s independence, usually right around Independence Day, meaning the city is bursting at the seams in June and July. Philadelphia was a Bing Top Destination for 2010. Despite the cold and the risk of snow, there are many indoor museums to explore in this city. In January there is a restaurant week to enjoy.

2. Morocco

Temperatures in Winter are generally in the 60s here, meaning you can have a nice mild winter with sunshine and save around $860 off travel and lodging. Depending on the altitude of your hotel, you may find yourself skiing or swimming. Morocco was a Top 10 County according to LonelyPlanet in 2010. If the architecture doesn’t win you over, the food alone will.

3. Italy

If you want to tour Italy for its museums and art, staying inside when temperatures drop may mean a huge savings. Travel savings may be up to $467 lower than high-peak travel times. Italy was recently honored as part of Frommer’s Top Destinations for 2011. There are many Saints days celebrated heavily in December. For Christmas, the Pope says a midnight mass, before that Christmas trees and Nativity scenes are placed around cities. Winter in Italy also includes Carnivale, with balls, parties, masks, music and confetti.

4. Mendocino County, California

Expect more rain and slightly cooler temperatures here, along with a savings of $110 off hotel and travel. Mendocino County was a Bing Top Destination for 2010.  At this time of year, you can see grapes being harvested and gray whales migrating. There are also regular mushroom walks and farmers’ markets.

5. Bulgaria

70% of travel here occurs during the summer and 10% occurs during the winter. With odds like those, you’ll have good luck avoiding a crowd. SmarterTravel found airfare/hotel roundtrip savings as high as $598. Lonely Planet named Bulgaria a Best Value Destination in 2010 and a Top 10 Country for 2011. You’ll experience cold, rainy winters but you’ll also find ski resorts and winter festivals.

Why so cheap and crowd-free?

Most of these sites are popular summer destinations and slip travelers minds in the winter months. Other people want to avoid unfavorable weather like rain or snow.
